1. Glen Mills, Wellyhole Street, Oldham, Lancashire - Base camp [no grid reference given / 4] (cf168 and 176).
An old cotton mill, various buildings + huts. For a while it was a transfer point and holding depot for German POW being sent to and returned from Canada. Also held a large number of Russian volunteers who had been captured fighting for the Germans in France. Capacity 5000 POWs. Mentioned in 'Prisoners of England' and 'Thresholds of Peace'.

2. Oaklands Hospital, Cockton Hill, Bishop Aukland, Co.Durham [NZ 2081 2899 / 1; 2003 12 large gable roofed huts in use as part of hospital].
International Red Cross inspection - 24 June 1944, German, Russian and Czech prisoners. A subsidiary POW Camp to Camp 93, at Harperley. Up to about 300 POWs. Some prisoners were men with medical training and worked on the wards. Hospital run by 1/17 Group Emergency Medical Service, it cared for wounded and sick POWs as well as civilians and military personnel. Mentioned in 'Prisoners of England'. Whittingham's Hospital nearby was also used for German pow's and was inspected by the International Red Cross on 5 August 1944.

3. Marbury Hall Camp, Northwich, Cheshire - base camp [SJ 561 449 / 5] (cf 189). Cage where Germans, Russians, Poles, Italians and Austrians were sent direct from Camp 9 for further sorting. *POW lettersheet 1946 in German to Germany.

4. b. From Alan E Smith - "I lived in Hedon East Yorks during the War and there was an Army Camp at the bottom of Ketwell Lane, which was later used as a POW Camp.My recollection is that at various times it housed Italians,Germans and Russians captured serving with the German Army. My father had Italian and German prisoners working with him on Johnsons farm and I am in possession of a letter from an Italian prisoner ,written to him after the war ,thanking him for the kindness shown him during his imprisonment. I also believe that the Russian prisoners were later sent back to Russia and were dealt with harshly by Stalin. I think other camps in the Hedon area also housed POWs and would be worth you researching."

1. Donna Nook Airfield, North Somercotes, Louth, Lincolnshire [TF 424 979 / 3]. In late 1944, the airfield became a German POW Camp with about 3,000 POWs, mostly Poles and Ukrainians from Polish 1st and 2nd Divisions Germany Army captured in France. Many POWs remained after 1945 as displaced persons. The Donna Nook airfield closed in 1945 and the camp in 1948.
